Loss of the Shaw

Eighteen
Val dive-bombers struck the southern end of the Navy Yard at 9:10 a.m. Three
of the planes
dropped their 550 lb. bombs on the destroyer USS Shaw, berthed in
the Floating Dry Dock #2.
One of the bombs ignited the forward fuel tanks.
The blaze detonated the destroyer's forward
magazines which exploded in an enormous
fireball. The floating dry dock and the
front half of the Shaw sank into Pearl
Harbor. Amazingly, the aft part of the
destroyer remained afloat.
Shaw's forward magazine explosion severed the destroyer's bow just behind the bridge
