Loss of the Arizona

Photo: The USS Arizona explodes

The 1,760 lb. armor-piercing bomb detonated
deep inside the Arizona near the forward
powder magazines. The subsequent magazine
explosion vented through the sides and decks
of the forward part of the battleship and
vaporized most of its structure.

The two 14" gun turrets fell 22 feet into what
remained of the ship's forward hull. The wreck
of the Arizona sank to the shallow floor of
Pearl Harbor and burned for two days.
