High Level Bombing

After the torpedo attack on
the battleships, 49 high-level Kate
bombers crossed the harbor at
10,000 feet. In groups of five, they
dropped their 1,750 lb. armor-piercing
bombs on Battleship Row.
This captured Japanese photograph
was taken ten seconds before a bomb
struck the Arizona near the forward 14"
gun turret. It crashed through five decks
and detonated near the 14" powder
magazines. The Arizona exploded in
a tremendous fireball that killed 1,177
of the ship's crew.
